Russia has 37 653 kilometers of coastline. Thus, shipping is already a widely used form of transport that caters to both national and international needs and so it is frequently used by local and foreign companies. There are a number of large inland water areas - such as Lake Baikal, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea - that can be accessed from Russia.

The Port of St. Petersburg is an important port for Russia. The Port of St Petersburg is divided into different sections, of which each division has its own vital role. There are four cargo areas that form the St Petersburg Port. The first St Petersburg Port cargo area is located in Gutuevsky Kovsh, which extends a distance along the Sea Channel.

The state organized Port Authority of Saint Petersburg manages, operates, and develops the Port of St. Petersburg. Connected to the sea by a 43-kilometer channel, today’s port is located on the islands that dot the mouth of the Neva River and consists of five basins covering 360 hectares. In 1999, over 28 million tons of cargo passed through the Port of St. Petersburg on 5542 vessels. Cargo included 7.4 million tons of oil products and 6 million tons of metals as well as chemicals, containers, timber, coal and ore, refrigerated cargo, grain, foods, and general cargo.

One of the largest coal handling ports to be found in Russia’s Northern Sea basin is the Port of Murmansk. The Port of Kazan is affectionately known as the Port of Five Seas. Besides commercial shipping traffic, the Port of Kazan also deals with many passenger liners.
